The Ikat is a fascinating weave created using a resist dye technique. Sections of yarn are prepared to resist dye penetration by tying, stitching, folding, rolling or applying solid substances such as mud, wax or gum. After dyeing, the patterns emerge against a coloured ground, in the original colour of the base material.

In the ikats used for this runner, more complex methods have been used where several hues are developed sequentially for coloured patterns on coloured grounds, leaving no part of the yarn or fabric undyed.
